The INSCRIPT (Indian Script) keyboard layout is the official standardized keyboard layout produced by the Government of India (DeitY) for typing all 12 major Indian languages (including Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Nepali, Bengali, and Punjabi). Unlike legacy remapped keyboards, INSCRIPT is built natively into Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android operating systems.
The Logical Structure of the INSCRIPT Layout
While QWERTY letter placement is arbitrary, INSCRIPT is engineered according to phonetic linguistics. The keyboard is split logically down the middle:
- Left Side of Keyboard: All Vowels (स्वर) and their corresponding Matras (मात्राएं).
- Right Side of Keyboard: All Consonants (व्यंजन), grouped phonetically by tongue articulation (K-varga, Ch-varga, T-varga, P-varga).
- Shift Key Layer: Unshifted keys type independent vowels and soft consonants; shifted keys type aspirated consonants and long vowels.
How Halant (+) Creates Half Letters & Conjuncts
In Devanagari script typing, conjunct characters (संयुक्त अक्षर) and half-letters (आधे अक्षर) are created using the Halant / Virama key (located on the D key in INSCRIPT).
To type "क्या":
Type क (
K) + ् (D) + या (Shift + Z, E)The Halant strips the inherent vowel sound from 'क', forming 'क्', which automatically joins with 'या' to create 'क्या'.
Step-by-Step Finger Placement for Hindi INSCRIPT
Just like English touch typing, INSCRIPT relies on home row anchors:
- Left Hand Anchors (Vowels): Little finger on
A(ो), Ring onS(े), Middle onD(्), Index onF(ि). - Right Hand Anchors (Consonants): Index on
J(र), Middle onK(क), Ring onL(त), Little on;(च).
14-Day Hindi INSCRIPT Practice Plan
- Days 1–3: Practice left-hand vowel matras on the home row without looking down.
- Days 4–7: Practice right-hand consonants (K-varga and T-varga words).
- Days 8–10: Master the Halant key for half-letters and complex conjuncts.
- Days 11–14: Take timed 5-minute typing tests to build WPM speed and confidence.
Enable the Hindi INSCRIPT keyboard in your OS settings and practice daily on Tyspingo.
